Voices of Djema El Fnaa (Sound Documentary)
Stefano Torrione is an Italian photographer who has dedicated the last two years covering the Djema El Fnaa square in Marrakech, Morocco. The site has been recently included in the official list of the 'intangible heritage' of humanity, a list put together by UNESCO to protect such locations all over the world. The heritage at Djema El Fnaa is verbal, is represented by the oral tradition of storytellers and by the Gnawa songs that for generations have entertained the mixed arab and berber audience of Marrakech. This project is based around the recordings of such voices, an attempt to save them from extinction - by combining Stefano's important photographic documentation and these sound recordings. Here is an introductory excerpt. LANGUAGE: French only.
